Blogging as a tool in political elections
Álvaro Ramírez Ospina has published an interesting article on Vox Publica which deals with how Latin Americans blog, including how they are using blogging in political elections as a tool, and interestingly how they have started national blogospheres! Global-local comes to mind..
What I find absolutely astonishing is how politicians in positions such as John Prescott ignore the power of the net and bloggers in particular, and the effect they can have on political elections. This article supports research done by Pew Research Center for the People and the Press and British journalist John Pilger who has claimed bloggers to be the new foreign correspondents.
“I think it’s called the internet or something – blogs is it? – I don’t know, I’ve only just got used to letters.” Deputy Prime Minister Prescott’s comment summer 2006 according to the article.
I sometimes find it difficult to explain exactly what Media studies is all about because it can cover so many different themes- however Alvaro provides a pretty good explanation :
A clue in good media studies has always been the analysis and comprehension of the “mediations” that mass media provide. It should be a study not about “technologies” but on how people use them and how audiences make sense of the messages, images and communications strategies that are mediated through those technology channels.
